Let's face it... Eating out in a small town can get a little monotonous sometimes. You find your favorites and you go back time and time again until they taste no different than your favorite flavor of ramen noodles. Time to mix it up a bit? That's what this section is for... to remind you of a local treat that you haven't had in a while, or maybe even introduce you to one you didn't know was around.

This week, it's...

GYROS @ YIA YIA NIKKI'S - posted on 05.18.09 by Mike

Punisher War Zone

Drive-thru joints that appear in random parking lots are always prone to skepticism; not because they're no good, but because so many of them just don't last. Often times it take me several weeks to even notice a new one (remember that bbq shack out on Island Ave?). Such was the case with Yia Yia Nikki's when I first stopped by on a whim.

It was a classic case of me kicking myself for waiting so long. The Lamb Gyros is an authentic Greek treat that satisfies the lunchtime sandwich fix without a hint of the "same ol' thing". A warm pita packed full of delicious meat, quality veggies, and tzatziki sauce to dip in or pour over (I like to ask for an extra side of tzatziki. Mmmm...) make for a lite yet filling meal.

The impressive salad that comes with it definitely pushes this combo over into "heckuva deal" territory, at just over 5 bucks.

And on another note, I had such a good time discussing the history of the very cordial Greek proprietors and the name of the restaurant that I'm not even gonna share it with you... go ask them yourself.
