The Blue Turtle
1124 Adams Avenue
541-963-3841

The Blue Turtle Gallery presents our Featured Artist, Stephen Wadner, in an exhibit entitled “more than meets the eye.” Making the move from Director of Campus Safety and Security to the creative life of an artist, seems like a huge leap but Stephen Wadner is now free to embrace his life-long pursuit of a degree in art. Born in Ohio, Wadner has traveled to Scotland, Portugal, Bosnia, and Albania as well as holding a variety of jobs from sawing lumber to milking cows. This vast range of experience brings knowledge of cultural values and differences that gives Wadner somewhat of an “outsider” perspective on life and a keen interest and appreciation for what is different. Wadner creates clocks of recycled materials that some call trash and throw away. He is drawing a distinction between what our modern values reflect and what those values were in an era gone by when frugality was a virtue. His gathering of clocks makes us think of time as mostly a series of ordinary and ‘everyday’ experiences. Wadner insists that we transcend the ordinary by attaching personal relationships with time as we attach remorse or regret for the past and joy or anticipation for the future. The nature and duration of time is also a puzzlement that Wadner has expressed in his clock “Approximate Time.” This particular clock is for those of us who divide time into segments of a clock face and do not operate on a strict minute by minute schedule. There is whimsy beneath the serious engagement of the notion of time. Wadner uses materials to build his clocks that show the effects of time. They transcend their intended everyday use and value to challenge us to the possibility that there is more there than “meets the eye.” He calls this “the Pygmalion effect,” applying good design and craftsmanship to their use and metamorphosis to Fine Craft.

The Potters House
6th & Penn T
541-963-5351

The Potter’s House is featuring the latest photography of Darcy Anne Dolge and the music of Bridgetown, a group from Warner Pacific College, during this month’s Artwalk.

Darcy’s artists statement best describes what you will see.

I am a photographer. For me that means that each time the shutter closes, I am attempting to embody the message that the subject itself is asking us to see. This makes me just a means by which something, anything, everything can offer its story to the world in a way which does not require words. The resulting photograph gives us time to contemplate and internalize the source material’s message.

For this showing, however, I would like to add a personal note as well. I call this series , ‘The Apple Connection’. There is an invisible but palpable bond between myself and my family that instantly makes itself known when I look at my young hands working with apples. These images of my Grandmother, Betty, in the apple orchard, of another Grand Betty making apple pies, and the memory of my Mother’s apple dishes that were always experimental; have a deeper meaning for me.

I feel a rich thread that connects us and reminds me of our individuality, our moral code, our propensity to take risks, and to live a life larger than our circumstance. From root and tree and limb and blossom they have infiltrated me and yet left me to ripen on my own. Such a gift.

I am a photographer and I offer these images for your consideration.

Bridgetown will be performing at 6:00 and 7:30 pm. They are a group of students from Warner Pacific College who do music ministry.

Bob will also be doing a Raku firing demonstration at 7:00.

We look forward to seeing you Thursday evening for an enriching and fun fill time.

LA GRANDE, Ore. (EOU) – When Frances Hodgson Burnett sat at her writing desk in New York City in the spring of 1911 and began to pen her famous children’s novel, she probably never dreamed that more than 100 years later a musical version of her book would be staged by a university theatre program in northeast Oregon.

An adaptation of Burnett’s “The Secret Garden” is opening at Eastern Oregon University May 15. The final main stage production of the year continues through May 18 with nightly showings at 7 and a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. All performances are in McKenzie Theatre in Loso Hall.

Kenn Wheeler, production director and associate professor of theatre at EOU, spoke about his desire to direct this particular musical.

“’The Secret Garden’ was the first production my wife and I saw on Broadway,” Wheeler said. “It was 1992, and we were working in upstate New York. Over the course of one day, we drove four hours to the city, found the theatre, saw the show and drove back to the Adirondack Mountains to our summer job.”

“The whole experience was unforgettable,” Wheeler continued. “We were able to see nearly the entire original cast and the show blew me away. We were laughing one instant and crying the next. From that moment on, I wanted to direct my own production of this amazing musical. And now I finally have the chance.”

“The Secret Garden” tells the story of 10-year-old Mary Lennox, played by Marina Kennedy, who is orphaned when her parents die from cholera while in India. She is sent to live in northern England with her brooding uncle Archibald Craven, played by Rick Mugrage, where she finds herself abandoned in his gloomy Misselthwaite manor with nothing to do and no one to play with.

While exploring the grounds, Mary discovers a “secret” garden closed off to the outside world. Archie’s wife Lily, played by Emily Smith, died 10 years earlier and in his grief Archie ordered the garden locked, never to be opened again.

With the help of new friends Martha, played by Caitlin Burke, and Dickon, played by Brian Moore, Mary sets out to find a way into the garden. She also learns, after following a crying voice late one night, that she has a cousin named Colin Craven, played by Elijah Mugrage, who is bedridden and seemingly destined to die.

Through the course of the musical, Mary discovers and recovers the dead garden, helps her cousin regain his health, and eventually helps her uncle put his grief behind him and face a future with his son.

Others living at Misselthwaite manor include Archie’s brother Dr. Neville Craven, played by Joshua Gilman, head housekeeper Mrs. Medlock, played by Julia Cieslak, head gardener Ben Weatherstaff, played by Kenn Wheeler, a nurse played by Kelsy Carson, and a maid, played by Bryn McLaughlin.

Rounding out the cast is group known as “The Dreamers.” These are characters from Mary’s past who died of the cholera but whose ghosts are helping her find her way. They include her mother Rose, played by Brittanie Sorenson, her father Albert, played by Jonathan Phipps, her nursemaid, played by Adraine Jacobs, Major Holmes, played by Griffin Fleming, his wife Claire, played by Becca Butler, Major Shelley, played by Caleb Hulsey and his wife, Mrs. Shelley, played by Mallory Livingston, Lieutenant Wright, played by Israel Bloodgood, Lieutenant Shaw, played by Ari Bloodgood, Rose’s friend Alice, played by Samantha Ragsdale, and an Indian Fakir played by Shahayla Ononaiye.

Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Marsha Norman adapted the script and Lucy Simon composed the music.

Michael Heather, assistant professor of theatre, designed the scenery and lighting for EOU’s production. Senior theatre major Alex Uemura is in charge of costuming, and La Grande dance instructor Ashly Braden created the choreography.

Jamie Jacobson, adjunct music instructor, taught the musical numbers to the performers with Mio Aoike serving as rehearsal accompanist. Teun Fetz, associate professor of music, is conducting the orchestra.

Senior theatre student Adam Lindberg is the stage manager, with Kelsy Carson, Bryn McLaughlin and Maia Turner serving as assistant stage managers.

Tickets to “The Secret Garden” are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, senior citizens, veterans and active military members.

Special ticket pricing is also available for families. For each general admission ticket purchased, one child aged 12 or younger will be admitted for $5.

“We really want people to bring the whole family out to this outstanding show,” Wheeler said.

Eastern Oregon University presents “Exposed,” the third and final senior capstone exhibition of the year, on display in Nightingale Gallery May 17-24.

A reception for artists Jennifer Brotherton, Trevor Durr and Asa Miller is from 6-8 p.m. on the opening day of the exhibition. The students will be showing a variety of ceramic sculpture, drawing, installation, painting and pottery.

“This diverse group of art and artworks coalesce into an exhibit which provides intimate insight into the artists and their work,” said Cory Peeke, gallery director and associate professor of art.

Brotherton is from Union and has focused in the medium of clay throughout her three years at EOU. Her current work consists of large-scale ceramic sculpture and charcoal drawings exploring the psychological and physical challenges faced by today’s youth.

Brotherton’s inspiration originates from societal standards, home life and innocence of young people. She is interested in the intimate moments in which these challenges exist, still-framing the honest emotions and raw reactions of children during confrontations such as conformity, obesity or identity conflict.

Durr is from Halfway and began studying art at EOU in the fall of 2009. The graffiti movement has been one of the principal dynamic forces behind his work as both a street and studio artist. His interest in street art, ceramics and combining the two, inspired what is now his current body of work.

Using a witty street art twist and graffiti aesthetics, Durr brings attention to cultural, political and social issues that are often overlooked by many, ranging from social media conflicts to more serious and worldwide issues like the actuality of freedom.

Miller is from Spray and began working with ceramics at EOU in 2008. His creations are unlike a painting, photograph or other varieties of fine art. They are meant to be more approachable and develop a deeper relationship with the viewer.

Utilizing the wood fire kiln at EOU, Miller has been creating objects that fulfill a certain purpose, such as a vessel meant for pressurized containment. By constructing pieces that can trick the eye, his recent work also establishes a tone of curiosity and inquiry with the viewer.

The Nightingale Gallery is located in Loso Hall on the EOU campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Liberty Theatre Foundation is proud to host soloist Sean Gaskell on Friday, May 17th at 8:00 p.m. in the Stage Door Theater.

Hailing from Seattle, Wash., Gaskell will give a solo acoustic set on the Kora, an ancient 21 stringed harp from West Africa. Gaskell features traditional songs of the Mandinka people from Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.

Kora music is traditionally played by Griots (Greeohs, oral/musical historians). The Kora is a very melodic and seemingly peaceful instrument, which is contrary to a repertoire that tells ancient stories of war and hardship, while praising people of high political status and those who helped expand the Mande Empire. While the Kora is only 300 years old, some of the songs date back as many as 800 years to the founding of the Mande Empire, which took place in Mali in the mid 13th century.

Gaskell has studied extensively under the instruction of Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh, both of Brikama, Gambia. He has also studied under Kane Mathis, a Kora player formerly based in Seattle who has lead groups such as “The Kora Band” and “The Sahel Band”.

Gaskell released his first solo album “Kora Music of West Africa” in March of 2012. He has performed at the Kartong Festival in Gambia, the Dombondir Festival in Senegal, the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle and at various venues across the United States.

Tickets to see Sean Gaskell $10 and are available at the Mountaineer Market, Direct Music Source, the EOU Bookstore and at the door. Proceeds benefit the Liberty Theater Foundation.

A MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WARM-UP PARTY

EOFF announced it’s 2014 Dates – February 20-22, 2014 – but before we can savor another year of great film and music in downtown LG we need to assist the organization in growing it’s pocket book to bring about a 5th annual celebration that continues to astound.

Portland, Oregon’s AU and ETERNAL TAPESTRY will cozy up with La Grande’s Catskills on Thursday, May 23rd at The Art Center at the Old Library to present a powerhouse evening of edgy rock, experimental psychedelia, and hyper-attentive, graceful, and often fierce instrumentation of sonic and psychological terrain. The trio of cutting edge NW musicians will be heading to the Tumbleweeds of Idaho to converge with a number of other stellar musicians.

AU

AU’s third album, Both Lights, is a recurring dream. Eleven songs made by the Portland, Oregon-based duo Luke Wyland and Dana Valatka, it’s a story of Time.

In its eleven songs, Both Lights constructs new sonic and psychological terrain for the listener. It unfolds like a story, both in its hyper-attentive, graceful, and often fierce instrumentation — the language of Wyland and Valatka — and in its heated and naked emotion. “This is all inner struggle, inner growth, inner seeking,” said Wyland. Set to music, life sounds like AU.

ETERNAL TAPESTRY

After the dark conceptual ambience of Beyond the 4th Door, the members of Eternal Tapestry decided the time was right to do an album embracing their live show – blistering psych rock filled with lyrical guitar soloing and a caveman approach to rhythm, an oddly euphoric state where melancholia is blasted by ecstatic noise.

“Committed psych, folk, and early metal music crate diggers could probably reference a vast and rich collection of LPs from the ’60s and ’70s that Eternal Tapestry’s work fits nicely alongside.” – Filter Magazine

CATSKILLS

From La Grande, Oregon. Jeff Grammer (drums, keyboard, banjo, vocals) Gregory Rawlins (guitar, vocals, harmonica, tamborine, cassette effects). Wayne Marvin Callahan (bass, vocals) have been evolving their newest project CATSKILLS, most recently playing at Boise’s Treefort Music Fest these homegrown experimentalists bring to the table raw and romping regional rock/folk.

The event cost is $5.00 at the door. (Eastern Oregon Film Festival members are admitted free). Support our growing film and music festival by experiencing this evening of cutting edge northwest centric music.

The two remaining artists who received Honored Artists awards at the 2012 Artists of Eastern Oregon Biennial Show will be featured at the ArtsEast’s office gallery beginning May 10. An opening reception will be held from 5 – 8 PM.

Peter Johnson is an associate professor of art at Eastern Oregon University. He has spent this past year on sabbatical as a 2012-13 Matsutani Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, MT.

“I am interested in how the artifacts we leave behind speak to our history and cultural identity,” says Johnson. “My work is meant to straddle the present, simultaneously looking back to the past and towards the future. It catalogues the act of making, constructing, inventing, and reinventing. My sculptures are not recreations but abstractions of the things we find ourselves surrounded by. These aged objects are meant to spur reflection of our pursuit of “progress” in relationship to the vast expanse of human history.” – Peter Johnson

Through her lens she captures the lives and loves of ranchfolk, considered by most to be a lifestyle from a nostalgic bygone era.

On days when she is able to steal a few moments and step away from the hard work of a rancher, Sitz reaches for her camera and takes in the action. Because of the unpredictable reality of ranch life, through happenstance and circumstance, her subject often chooses her. She is inspired by both color and black and white photography. Her vibrant color photographs depict realistic moments, while her raw black and white photographs harkens back to a time long passed.

The exhibit runs through June 28. The ArtsEast office gallery is located in the Community School of the Arts Building, 6th Street and “L” Avenue, across from the La Grande police station. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 4 PM. For information call 541-962-3624 or email dheath@eou.edu.
