Whether you consider yourself "outdoorsy" or not, everyone likes to get outside once in a while. Next time you hear the infamous phrase "There's nothing to do around here", you send them to this page.
La Grande is a wonderful place for the mountain biking enthusiast! The Grande Ronde Valley is the second largest valley in the world that is fully encompassed by mountains. All those hills, forests, creek beds and rocky outcroppings make for plenty of trails and amazing views!
One of my favorite trail systems is the Skills Trail off of Owsley Canyon Road. It features lots of twists and turns, wooden bridges, views, rocks, tough climbs and lots of trees. The trails are about 16 miles total and can be tricky to memorize. Located about 3 miles north of La Grande, the trails are easily accessed on bike or by car. You get a nice climb to warm up if you ride and there is plenty of parking up top if you choose to drive. I recommend going with a local that knows the trail system first, or stop by the local bike shop The Mountain Works located at 1307 Adams in downtown La Grande and ask Whit for a map (about a $1 I think) and instructions.
There are great trails all across the valley and I recommend trying them all! The bike shop is a great resource but also be sure to check out www.LaGrandeRide.com for further information. There is an excellent book with maps written by locals available at Sunflower Books on Washington Ave for $14.95 called Mountain Biking La Grande.
Check back in for more blogs as I continue to explore the mountain biking trail systems of the Grande Ronde Valley!
