La Grande is a great place for road biking! The Grande Ronde Valley has numerous roads in great condition that are rarely used by cars. Some of our roads are in poor condition due to the extreme winters we get from time to time, but the lack of traffic, awesome views, great weather and diversity more than make up for the occasional bump in the road.
One of my favorite short rides is Foothill Road. I generally head out at about 10pm in the summertime. Make sure your bike is equipped with high quality front and rear lights or you won’t make it far out of town. I picked up a great set for less than $100 from The Mountain Works located at 1307 Adams in downtown La Grande. The roads are empty by 10pm and with lights on I head out toward Foothill Road with my buddy. Foothill Road is on the southern edge of La Grande and takes you out 7.5 miles to a freeway overpass. From there you can brave the freeway back into La Grande (sketchy!) or turn around and head back the way you came.
Foothill Road passes by Ladd Marsh National Wildlife Refuge and it is beautiful by day or night. I enjoy night because of the blanket of stars overhead and the subtle changes in temperature that occur as you move through various altitudes in the valley. Riding at night is a great joy and seems to me even more like flying as the road and your bicycle disappear below you in the darkness.
